A clear scope for the work
Identify every stump, including old stumps hidden by grass or garden beds. Ask what grinding depth and surrounding root treatment are proposed. Grinding, taking material away, supplying fill and reinstating a lawn are different tasks and should be named individually if you want them included.

Is grinding the same as removing the whole root system?
No. Ask the contractor what portion of the stump and roots the proposed work addresses. A future slab, footing or new tree may need a separate approach.
